Testing Substack embeds with my fav web comic.

Can I embed a Substack post in Ghost?

I'm a huge fan of Work Chronicles, so much so that I'll forgive them for being on Substack. (Although any day you want to move to Ghost, please hit me up! Your email newsletter looks fine, but right now your web archive looks terrible. I can help, and you could quit giving Substack 10%!)

Anyway, I wanted to share the latest (which might have been excessively relatable), and here's what happened: The first part between the lines is the result of pasting in the embed offered by Substack. The second is an image, so that you can see what happens on web, if you're actually on ActivityPub or in email.

(comic) What do you do for a living? by Work Chronicles

Read on Substack

Here's the raw embed:

<div class="substack-post-embed"><p lang="en">(comic) Solving for Low Productivity by Work Chronicles</p><p></p><a data-post-link href="https://workchronicles.substack.com/p/comic-solving-for-low-productivity-4d8">Read on Substack</a></div><script async src="https://substack.com/embedjs/embed.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

See that JavaScript (embed.js)? It means this embed isn't going to work on email/ActivityPub.

I thought maybe I could adjust the css to get it to not crop the comic, while managing to spoil the punchline. Nope, that embed script actually retrieves the image cropped in that aspect ratio. I guess that's ... efficient?

So yeah, ewww. Ick.

So I thought maybe I'd try to replicate that embed, using Ghost's new CTA card. And here it is:

Could we set up a "share this post" widget that would produce this sort of layout, as an alternative to the bookmark card (too small and not editable) and javascript-heavy embeds? I'm not seeing a reason why not, and it could even work in email. Thoughts... Wouldn't it be cool to have a bookmarklet/extension that would produce a CTA card for any url? Sort of a grown-up but more easily editable bookmark card?

TO BE CONTINUED...

🎉/😠 In other news, we might be getting closer to official theme translations being merge-able. I'm oscillating between excitement that it looks like it's going to happen, and frustration around feeling like I need to do it or it won't happen. And of course, lacking funding, progress will be slow once it stops being fun.

More to come.

🌐 I spent a while catching up on translator submissions this morning. I didn't mean to get a month behind, and it was a bad month for it, with some strings getting renamed, new strings getting added, and other 'fun' that meant all the older PRs had merge problems.
